Both
Lennon
and Chapman watched television constantly.
Chapman
regarded it as a kind of receiver or mirror in his living room. It was
beaming signals directly at him 24 hours a day, he saw himself as a
"receiver" had learned to tune himself to decode the signals.
For
Lennon,
television was as essential as the air we breathe. In almost every
room of the Dakota Apartments, the television was always on. And being a
superstar, he was in a position to use the media to broadcast his opinions
and ideas to the rest of the world.

Chapman was fascinated by the way
Todd Rundgren had played with ideas of "television" in most of his album
designs, using the 625 horizontal lines on "The Hermit of Mink Hollow" and test
cards on "Voyage To Utopia". |

|
| Lennon had
experimented with "televisual" and multiple images on some of his album
covers - most noticeably on the back of the Plastic Ono album and the
use of several pairs of glasses on the Walls & Bridges album.
|
| And Chapman
was fascinated by the "Dalivision" effect Salvador Dali used in his
portraits of Abraham Lincoln. Multiple images that make an image
that at first sight looks blurred, but when the signal is fine
tuned, the picture becomes clear - that is what was happening to
Chapman during 1980.

Chapman had interpreted all these different
and various signals as a series of messages for him to fine tune and
wait for the key signal, that was sure to come via the television
screen.
When it came, the signal that
scrolled across the screen was "Thou Shalt Not Kill", which led Chapman back to
a close reading of sections of the Bible, in particular the gospels of John and
Mark, (or
in Chapman's mind, the gospels of John Lennon and Mark Chapman) in which he
found the conflict between himself and John Lennon mirrored. |
