Chapman
had seen the signs
and responded to the triggers. He had read and re-read
"The Catcher In The Rye" and in his mind had become Holden
Caulfield, on a mission to rid the world of "phoneys".
He had bought the art work that revealed the split and
multiple personalities he had become.
John
Lennon
was completing a ten year cycle - the mournful sound of
the bell chiming
dully on "Mother" (Plastic Ono Band album 1970
- listen to the original vinyl - modern digital
recordings cut out this bell) is repeated
and completed by the harmony bell chiming at the start of
Starting Over and Beautiful Boy (Double Fantasy 1980)
Chapman
had been waiting for a
"bell in your head will ring" (from "All The Children
Sing" by Todd Rundgren) to signal Judgement Day,
the end of the world. Here
was that signal, loud and clear, and as the new
"Catcher" it was Chapman who had to protect the
children, and save them from the phoney Lennon.
John Lennon
was
looking forward to spending Christmas time in New York,
with Yoko and son Sean.
Chapman now
saw himself as Holden
Caulfield, the new Catcher in the Rye, drifting around New York in the days before
Christmas.
John
Lennon
was singing about "watching the wheels go round and
round" and "no longer riding on the merry go round" ("Watching
The Wheels"
Double Fantasy)
Chapman was drawn towards Central Park and the Carousel.
Like Holden,
at the end of the novel, he stood watching the carousel going round and round.
He, like Holden, was looking for a way to get back home.
John Lennon
was
singing about "clean-up time" and "the oracle has
spoken" ("Clean-up Time" Double Fantasy)
Chapman listened to the lyrics of "Clean-up
Time" and knew it was time to make a move. The
oracle he was hearing was telling him to cleanse the
world of phoneys.
John Lennon was singing "close
your eyes, have no fear, the monster's gone, he's on the
run and your daddy's here" ("Beautiful Boy" Double
Fantasy)
Chapman, as the new Catcher, would protect the
little children from all the monsters of the world.
That was Holden's role - that was Chapman's role, and
yet here was Lennon the phoney, claiming to be the hero
that Chapman wanted to be.
John
Lennon
the Beatle superstar was back.
Chapman
was excited by the
release of Todd Rundgren's new album "Deface The Music",
released in December 1980. It was a spoof Beatle album; the cover mimicked the
"With The Beatles" album cover and the songs mimicked
Beatle compositions. To Chapman, the message was clear -
he was being told the Beatles
had to be defaced - Lennon had to be defaced.
