Beatles' albums, John Lennon songs, The Catcher in the Rye, Todd Rundgren,
Salvador Dali artwork...the strange
coincidences
& synchronicities that brought together John Lennon
and Mark David Chapman.
Mark Chapman was a
lifelong fan of Todd Rundgren, and he would listen to Todd's albums non-stop and learn all the
lyrics off by heart. He would also study the album covers for clues.
He was intrigued by the mirror imagery of
Todd's "A Wizard/A True Star" and was aware that Todd Rundgren had used
televisual concepts throughout his recording career.
These were what Chapman picked up as
special signals beamed especially to him, like a programme being broadcast
for him to receive.
Todd's album, "Voyage To Utopia" album even
had a kind of "test card" as its inner sleeve, as if Chapman was being told
to fine tune his reception and wait for the signal to get clearer.
So he waited....for the final
sequence of signals.
And when
John Lennon released "Double Fantasy" in November 1980, the
lyrics and album design convinced Chapman that everything was coming
together, that the time was now, that the signals could not be
denied and he must kill the rock superstar.
For Lennon too, the
album signalled an ending - it closed a ten-year cycle that had
begun with the chiming bell on "Mother" on the 1970 "Plastic Ono
Band" album....now the bell was to be heard on the introduction of
"Double Fantasy"...this time though, its chimes mean death.
Also, in "Watching the
Wheels", Lennon sings about a carousel spinning - further proof for
Chapman. Because the carousel in Central Park is featured in the
final section of Salinger's "The Catcher In The Rye"....when Holden
Caulfield is almost home.
The wheels were
turning...history and synchronicity were bringing everything
together.
All through 1980,
Chapman had been waiting for a bell to ring - that was one of the
messages he had picked up from Todd Rundgren - and here it was, ringing loud
and clear on Lennon's new album! It confirmed Lennon as his target.
Finally, in November of 1980, just a few
days before the murder, Todd released "Deface The Music". It was both a
send-up of the "With The Beatles" album cover from 1963, and a crude parody
of the Beatles' songs.
The two albums were
mirror images of each other, and to Chapman, this new signal was crystal clear -
he must de-face the music
of the Beatles, or de-face (destroy) one of the Beatles.
Lennon sending out signals....Chapman receiving signals
Television....newspapers...radio...magazines....the books he
read...the art works he loved....the music he listened to...all
these were giving Mark David Chapman the signals he craved.
And faced
with this overwhelming array of signs and signals, some of which he
had been waiting for, some of which were new and sensational,
Chapman made up his mind to board the plane to New York, seek out
John Lennon, and kill him.
Remember....this is only a small sample of my
findings.
