During 1979, Chapman started collecting works
of art, and spent borrowed money to acquire them. Of greatest significance was Dali's
print of "The Metamorphosis of Narcissus"
because he was fascinated with the idea of its reflections and
mirror images.
It shows Narcissus gazing into the
mirror-like waters, having fallen in love with his other self. He gazes in
the water to find himself, but it leads to him losing himself. Again, the
link with doubles and twin images is clear - Narcissus and his image; Mark
Chapman and his other - John Lennon.
(Or Mark Chapman and Holden Caulfield.)
Chapman had to have this painting
because it expressed perfectly his disturbed state of mind and personality problems.

Chapman's other favourite work of
art was Norman Rockwell's "Triple Self-Portrait", which shows the idea of split
personality and the battle that lies ahead trying to stop yourself splitting up into so
many conflicting parts.
...the triple self...
Mark Chapman.....John
Lennon.....Holden Caulfield
The artist peers nervously into the mirror in an attempt to find
out who he really is, while the soldier's helm and eagle wings on the frame all add a
military theme to the work - symbolizing the battle ahead to preserve your fragile personality
- or to destroy an identity that poses a threat.

Chapman bought a copy of "Lincoln in
Dalivision" by Salvador Dali because he found it fascinating. It
is firstly a picture made up of other pictures, expressing the
complexity of things - that things are not always what they
seem, especially when viewed in context. Also, the "Dalivision"
chimes with his obsession with television. Lastly, the link with
Abraham Lincoln's assassination meant Chapman had to have this
painting.
